When it comes to magical places, it is well deserved to mention the “Islas del Rosario” (Rosario Islands), located in the Caribbean coast of Colombia. This wonderful paradise, also known as “Corales del Rosario” (Rosario Corals), is a small archipelago formed by thirty islands that are close to Cartagena city.

The beautiful tourist landscape found in Islas del Rosario is considered a natural wonder. In 2009 Cartagena de Indias joined the Club of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World, highlighting the Rosario Islands due to its natural landscapes, crystal clear water and coral formations that show a unique ecosystem in the world.

These spectacular islands are a privilege of nature as they are sheltered from the open sea with an imperceptible swell. “El oceanario” (The oceanarium)

At this place you will enjoy all the wonders, beauty and color of the marine life from “Corales del Rosario National Natural Park”. A pleasant guided tour of the sea will allow you to know, appreciate and enjoy the richness of the Colombian sea.

The oceanarium has a small place that they call a museum. In it you will  see diversity of algae, sponges, corals, molluscs, crustaceans, fish, reptiles and marine mammals.

A little history…

History tells us that when the Spaniards arrived to conquer the new world, they were amazed by the beauty and splendor of a group of islands located in an archipelago near where Cartagena is today.

According to historians, the Spanish Crown gave some private nobles of the time who had settled in Cartagena, the possession of several of those islands, islets and cays of what is now known as the Rosario and San Bernardo Islands.

The possessions passed, for decades, hand in hand among important and wealthy families of Colombia, who made them their summer refuge.

Today, more than 500 years after being discovered, the State is trying to recover them from the domain of those who claim to be their rightful owners.
